Steppin’ to the beat at FAMU’s homecoming

Commentary by Sydney Weaver-Bey

Homecoming always seems to instill a certain sense of pride in Rattlers; many flock from all corners of the country and descend on Tallahassee, to be back on “The Hill.”

The Oct. 28 date remains but a few weeks away, and many are getting ready for the festivities now. FAMU students are busy putting together shows, preparing for the concert and planning parties galore.

Every year, the Student Government Association puts together a myriad of shows for students’ entertainment. Last year, homecoming week included fashion shows, Greek step shows and a comedy show. On the Friday before the game, the set was filled to capacity with radio station 102.3 providing the musical entertainment.

Life on “The Hill” would not be the same if it were not for homecoming.  Granted, other elements make life here at FAMU unique and special, but homecoming belongs near the top.

My freshman year, as I stepped out of the doors of McGuinn Hall during homecoming week, I was truly amazed by the sea of people. As the week progressed, more and more people arrived, all with a great sense of pride for the campus.
Homecoming is a time to cherish, a time to truly relish in school pride.

Each year, Rattlers count on a few constants. For one, an immeasurable quantity of fun floods the campus and students. Second, The Marching 100 will most definitely put on a show, which will be talked about for some time. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, alumni return to share their Rattler pride.

Notable and nostalgic is always the mixture of old and new Rattlers. Ones who have taken their experiences at FAMU on with them throughout life and mixing it up with those just now learning who they are, all share the common phenomenon of Rattler pride and a quest for fun. So, Rattlers and Rattler fans, it’s that time of the year again. Time to enjoy the company of the hundreds and thousands who have become so much like family. Time again to try and grab that seat in Bragg and watch the Rattlers and Morgan State duke it out.  See you at the festivities: be safe and have fun.
