Concert to benefit Friends of Wakulla Springs

The Big Kahunas, headed by Steve Metz, will put on a benefit concert Dec. 1 to raise funds for the Friends of Wakulla Springs State Park. The organization is battling a couple of noxious environmental intrusions into the spring, most of which are due to the increased nitrates that surface at the spring. The DEP sprayfield permit that allows the city of Tallahassee to dispose of effluent at its Tram Road facility is being challenged. Contributions from Friends of Wakulla Springs State Park to the Florida Wildlife Federation are helping in some of the legal costs. The band has a strong local following for its “old standards” type rock, and the show is at the American Legion Hall on Lake Ella. The music begins at 8 p.m.. Admission is $10 individual and $25 for a family. For more information visit wakullasprings.org.

Field trips to teach about woodpeckers

On three Saturdays in November and December, Chuck Hess and Joel Casto will lead six adventurers per trip to the location of a red-cockaded woodpecker colony to see an adult woodpecker captured, banded, and released. Learn more about these beautiful endangered birds, their habitat, and how to spot their nest cavities. Then observe the dramatic capture and see an adult woodpecker up close. To sign up for one of the trips on Nov. 18, Dec. 2, or Dec. 9, please send an email to lynn_artz@hotmail.com or call 926-8756.
